Question of the Day

This came at me randomly from the four-year-old during lunch.

"What was Saddam Hussein's wife's name?"

Does anyone know?

Not sure you'll want to explain this to a 4-year-old (we ARE dealing with a brutal dictator, after all), but the more precise question may be, What were his WIVES' names?

Answer:

Sajida Talfah was his first wife (1963) (and also, coincidentally his first cousin). Marriage was arranged when he was 5 and she was 7. Met for the first time on their wedding day. Turned against her husband when he had his sons-in-law and second cousins assassinated in 1996, but remained married to him.

Samira Shahbandar was his second wife (1986) and alleged mother of his third son. The two were introduced by one of Saddam’s servants. She was already married when they met, so Saddam forced her husband to divorce her. Apparently, one of Sajida’s sons was angry about this marriage, and later, in front of distinguished guests at a house party, he bludgeoned to death the servant who had introduced them.

Nidal al-Hamdani is his (rumored, but probable) third wife.

Wafa el-Mullah al-Howeish is his (rumored) fourth wife (2002).
